Pregnancy amid this pandemic can be risky. Data shows that there were 71,986 cases of pregnant women with Covid-19 in the country as of February 22 this year.

Experts also highlight that when a pregnant woman has Covid-19, there is a higher risk that the fetus will develop congenital disabilities.

What if you get pregnant during the pandemic?

Avoid Infection

Avoid Covid-19 infection and all viral infections, including the flu. Experts state that prolonged high fever, especially during the first trimester, affects fetal development. It can also lead to early pregnancy loss (EPL), also known as a miscarriage or incomplete abortion.

Symptoms of miscarriage can include bleeding that sometimes contains blood clots, pain that is like menstrual cramps, and pain in the lower back. It is essential to talk to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

To prevent miscarriage, contact your doctor at the slightest sign of a fever. Your doctor will know what steps to take to find out if you have Covid-19. If it is not Covid-19, your doctor will prescribe medication that is safe for pregnancy. Follow all instructions to the letter.

It is best to prevent infection in the first place. You must be more cautious than everyone else. During the pandemic, avoid leaving the house unnecessarily. Ask someone to do errands for you. If you must shop, do it online.

Only go on essential trips like doctors’ appointments. Never take your prenatal sessions for granted. These are crucial for a healthy pregnancy.

Always wear a mask when outside the house and avoid crowds. If there are other people around, stay one meter or more away from them. Sanitize your hands frequently with alcohol. Do not touch your face, especially your eyes, when outside.

Prevent Congenital Disabilities

Apart from Covid-19 and other infections, there are additional factors that also cause congenital disabilities. You must learn how to avoid these, as well.

Do not smoke while pregnant and avoid second-hand smoke, too. Do not drink alcohol.

If you are taking prescription medication when you get pregnant, inform your doctor. Follow orders on whether to continue, stop or replace these medicines.

Do not take unprescribed drugs. You do not know what medications are harmful to your condition. For example, a drug used to treat severe acne can cause congenital disabilities. Some herbal supplements can be detrimental, too.

Pregnant women are, however, required to take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid each day to prevent defects in the baby’s spine and brain. These are available in the form of vitamins. It is also beneficial to consume food fortified with folic acid.

Obesity in a pregnant woman increases the possibility of congenital disabilities and pregnancy complications. It is best to be in a healthy weight range before getting pregnant. If you get pregnant while overweight, ask for help from your doctor to best manage your weight.

Exercise and Eat Well

Exercise is necessary not only to manage a pregnant woman’s weight but also to help the body cope with the various changes that are happening. Regular exercise must be part of a pregnant woman’s routine.

Not all exercises are the same, though. Some can be too strenuous or can even be harmful. Choose those that are safe for pregnant women.

A healthy diet is also vital during pregnancy. Avoid going on fad diets to lose weight. You need nutritious food that will not add unnecessary weight.

Having a Baby

It is possible to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby even amid the pandemic.

You must be extra careful, though, and follow all precautions to avoid Covid-19 and any other infection. On top of that, do not forget the basic health guidelines for pregnancy and childbirth.

As a pregnant woman, you must shore up all your physical defenses. Prepare for any unforeseen circumstances. In these critical times, you must be ready for anything.
